 Important Update About Seasonal Color!
January's unusually long freeze has taken its toll on the pansies. As you
have probably noticed, they are looking rather sad right about now. But,
not to worry, most should bounce back when given a chance to thaw out for
a bit and recover from almost two straight weeks of frozen temps. Pansies,
unlike their name implies, can withstand temperatures below freezing.
Normally, when we see a few nights of hard frosts, the pansies all will droop
over and then pop right back up when the day gets warmer. But, this unusually
long spell of freezing weather has definitely stretched them to their limit
of tolerance. One of the main issues we are seeing right now as a result of
all these prolonged freezing temperatures is desiccation.
For many of the plants, their roots have been frozen for so long that they have not
been able to draw any water into their leaves and, as a result, they are wilted even
though there may be plenty of moisture in the soil. So, once the soil thaws out,
that moisture will become available to the plant and we should see them perk
up quite a bit.
It is reasonable to expect to see some casualties, but we believe
this to occur only in areas of low
protection from cold and wind. At the point we have some warmer days the pansies
will show their colorful blooms again.
*Snow and Ice Removal*
With the recent cold, snow and sleet, we've been reminded that although such events
do not happen frequently, they do occur. With the possibility of snow and ice storms
during the winter months ahead, make sure to take precautions for your
sidewalks and lots to be clear in order to eliminate the potential for accidents.
Allscape has all the equipment needed to attack the snow and ice.

Are you using a NC Licensed Irrigation Contractor?
A legislative board, effective January 1, 2009, oversees the licensing of
Irrigation Contractors to protect the public health, safety and welfare and
to promote the efficient use of water. According to the licensure law effective
June 30, 2009, "...all irrigation construction or contracting performed by an
individual, partnership, association, firm or group shall be under the direct
supervision of an individual licensed by the Board."
The State Board will be investigating not only contractors, but property
owners as well to enforce this legislation. If the contractor performing either
service or installation is not licensed, both parties may be penalized.
Allscape, Inc is a licensed Irrigation Contractor, and one of the first in the
state to hold such license. For more information, see www.nciclb.org.
