March - April Newsletter Measuring the marigolds Could it be, stop and see How beautiful they are" At ALLSCAPE, we don’t think that the beauty refers to the Cankerworm, but rather the flowers. And Cankerworms, or inchworms as they are sometimes called, are hardly beautiful. The cankerworm defoliates trees/shrubs in early spring. This defoliation increases tree stress and can lead to increased borer damage, branch dieback and root decline. One year of cankerworm defoliation is not permanently damaging to a healthy plant but two of more successive years of heavy defoliation may kill trees. Cankerworms also causes a severe nuisance problem to humans. Larvae descending on silken threads drop onto people, pets, doorways, cars and everything else. They hang from trees, lamp poles, mailboxes, children play equipment making outdoor recreation undesirable. Although the damage is done in the spring, control can begin in early December. Individual trees can be protected by applying sticky traps which capture cankerworms. Applying a glue barrier to the tree trunk, the wingless cankerworm moths were trapped as they climbed the tree. The more bands installed, the greater the reduction in the cankerworm population. Tree banding works because the female must climb up the tree trunk to lay eggs. Timing is very important and must occur prior to the female beginning her trip up the tree. If you have questions or would like our assistance removing the bands, please give us a call.
